Nigeria has reiterated its respect for Niger’s sovereignty and called for discussions on mutual concerns, following allegations by Niger’s military-led administration that Nigeria was involved in a terrorist attack.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, emphasized the nation’s commitment to regional stability and peaceful relations with its neighbor.
“The Federal Republic of Nigeria reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, stability, and regional harmony in West Africa,” Tuggar said, addressing claims by Abdourahman Tchiani, leader of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.
Nigeria dismissed the allegations as unfounded and counterproductive, urging constructive dialogue to prevent tensions from escalating. Tuggar highlighted the historical and cultural ties between the two nations and stressed the importance of cooperation.
“Nigeria remains steadfast in its desire for dialogue, the cornerstone of sustainable solutions,” the statement read. “We will not embark on any actions that undermine Niger’s sovereignty and security.”
The minister outlined steps to foster trust, including humanitarian support for border communities and collaboration to ease regional tensions. Tuggar also called on international partners to support reconciliation efforts rather than exacerbate divisions.
“Nigeria remains guided by the principles of diplomacy, mutual respect, and the pursuit of peace,” Tuggar concluded. “Through constructive engagement, we can work towards a more prosperous and stable future for our people.”
The call underscores Nigeria’s commitment to resolving disputes amicably and maintaining harmony in West Africa.
