Zulum approves N500m for rehabilitation of Borno Agriculture college

Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Zulum, has approved the rehabilitation of the Mohammed Lawan College of Agriculture (MOLCA) in Maiduguri, allocating N500 million for repairs and development.

The college suffered extensive damage during the September 10th floods, which inundated parts of Maiduguri and nearby areas. Governor Zulum made the announcement during an assessment visit to the institution on Tuesday, addressing staff and management.

He emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring and modernizing the college’s infrastructure, promising new classrooms, hostels, lecture halls, and teaching tools to enhance academic quality.

“The existing facilities are insufficient for delivering quality education,” Zulum stated. “We will invest in building modern infrastructure and equipping the college with the necessary resources for academic excellence.”

The governor urged the college management to channel the N500 million into revenue-generating initiatives, such as aquaculture, livestock farming, and irrigation agriculture, to foster self-reliance. However, he clarified that education remains a social service and revenue should not come from tuition fees.

As part of the intervention, Zulum announced financial support for affected individuals: N200,000 for each of the 197 staff members and N100,000 for the 937 students to help replace items lost in the floods. He also directed the provision of agricultural tools, including drip and sprinkler irrigation systems.

Governor Zulum was accompanied by top government officials, including Secretary to the State Government Bukar Tijani, Elder Statesman Musa Inuwa Kubo, and Government House Permanent Secretary Mustapha Ali Busuguma.
