Nigeria, Spain sign MoU to strengthen political ties

Nigeria and Spain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations, establishing a framework for regular dialogue to enhance cooperation and advance shared interests between the two nations.

The agreement was signed on Tuesday in Madrid during a working meeting between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares. The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral relations under the Spain-Africa Strategy 2025–2028.

A joint statement described Nigeria as a strategic partner for Spain in West Africa, while Spain remains a key ally for Nigeria within the European Union. Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing collaboration in economic development, security, education, energy, and climate change.

They also discussed regional stability in West Africa and the Sahel, emphasizing the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in maintaining peace and development. Global issues, including the conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, were also addressed, with both ministers underscoring the importance of peace, stability, and adherence to international law.

The ministers agreed that the MoU marks a significant step in deepening Nigeria-Spain relations and pledged to continue working closely to strengthen Africa-Europe ties.
