NNPC calls for greater collaboration, transparency in global decarbonization efforts

At the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition & Conference (#ADIPEC2024) on November 5, 2024, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Ltd. urged increased collaboration and transparency among global energy stakeholders to meet net-zero carbon goals by 2050.

NNPC Group CEO Mele Kyari, represented by Executive Director, Upstream, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, highlighted Africa’s dual challenge of decarbonization and energy poverty. Speaking at a panel session on decarbonizing upstream, midstream, and downstream operations, Kyari emphasized that cooperation and openness are essential to bridging performance gaps across countries without blaming those who lag.

To drive Nigeria’s decarbonization, Kyari noted the nation’s policy shifts: declaring a “Decade of Gas” to transition from diesel to gas and removing fuel subsidies. He added that NNPC aims to end gas flaring by 2030, repurposing gas for automotive and power generation.

Despite Nigeria’s vast 209 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves, Kyari observed that funding remains a challenge, as international oil companies often prioritize export gas. He called for enhanced access to capital for developing countries in the global south to support their decarbonization efforts.

Kyari also praised partnerships, citing TotalEnergies’ collaboration with NNPC on methane measurement and detection technology. ADIPEC, attended by over 180,000 participants, is the world’s largest gathering of energy professionals, focusing this year on “Connecting Minds. Transforming Energy.”
