The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has condemned and dissociated itself from unauthorized political comments made by an individual dressed in a Spy Police uniform regarding the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial elections.
In a statement Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the comments, captured in a video circulating on social media, were made by a Supernumerary (Spy) Police Officer employed by a private company and not a regular officer of the NPF.
Adejobi added that Supernumerary Police Officers are private individuals trained by the Nigeria Police for specific security duties, primarily within their place of employment. Unlike regular officers, they are not on the NPF payroll, do not swear an oath of allegiance, and have the right to political affiliations and freedom of expression. However, the NPF emphasized that engaging in political activities while in uniform is inappropriate.
The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the arrest and investigation of the officer involved. The NPF reiterated that the officer’s political comments do not reflect the views of the Nigeria Police Force and urged the public to disregard such statements. The NPF remains committed to upholding professionalism, neutrality, and the rule of law.
