- IGP urges vigilance during online engagements
In its relentless battle against cybercrime and cyber-related offenses, the Nigeria Police Force marked a significant victory on October 4, 2023, with the apprehension of two suspects, Chinonso Eze and Victory Ebomuche. The arrests are in connection with a case involving criminal conspiracy, identity theft, and computer-related fraud.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters, Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the two suspects, aged 18 and 24, were taken into custody at their residence in Agua Marina Estate, Apo, FCT Abuja.
He said this development underscores the culmination of an exhaustive investigative effort and reflects the unwavering commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in the fight against cybercrime.
Adejobi added that a dedicated team of investigators meticulously gathered evidence and conducted thorough inquiries, ultimately leading to the successful arrest of these suspects.
He said the operation laid bare a complex network of cybercriminal activities, primarily centered around romance scams and fraudulent online investments. Such activities not only victimize individuals but also pose a substantial threat to our nation’s cybersecurity.
As part of the ongoing efforts, potential victims linked to the suspects have been identified, and measures are in place to mitigate immediate and long-term cyber threats.
The Inspector General of Police, while commending the Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center, DCP Uche Ifeanyi Henry, for these significant successes, emphasized the critical importance of vigilance and caution in online interactions. He urged the global cyber community to verify the authenticity of online acquaintances, exercise financial discretion, and promptly report any suspicious online activities to the authorities.
Adejobi reminded the public of the importance of reporting such activities, suspicions, or any other cybercrime or cyber-related crimes through the Center’s dedicated e-reporting portal at incb.npf.gov.ng or via email at policecyberunit@npf.cybersecurity.gov.ng.
He said the Nigeria Police Force remains unwavering in its commitment to safeguarding the digital environment, and extended their gratitude to the public for their continued support and cooperation in our efforts to combat cybercrime.
Adejobi said upon the conclusion of the investigation, the suspects will face charges in court.
