In a major crackdown on illegal mining, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have dismantled a syndicate operating in the Odiagbo-Okaba district of Ankpa Local Government Area, Kogi State.
Led by Assistant Commandant of Corps (ACC) John Onoja Attah, the operation resulted in the arrest of 17 suspects, the impoundment of three trucks, and the confiscation of 39 motorcycles allegedly used in the illicit mining activities.
The Mining Marshal initiative is a joint effort between the Federal Ministries of Solid Minerals Development and Interior, with a mandate to enforce mining regulations, combat illegal operations, and safeguard the country’s mineral resources.
According to the NSCDC, the raid followed complaints from local residents about environmental damage and public health risks posed by the unauthorized mining operations.
Commandant General Dr. Ahmed Audi reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to protecting Nigeria’s critical assets, warning that those exploiting the sector unlawfully would be brought to justice.
This latest enforcement action aligns with the Kogi State Government’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable mining practices and preserve the environment for local communities.
