Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has confirmed that there will be no movement restrictions during the upcoming Edo State Local Government Area (LGA) elections scheduled for Saturday, September 2, 2023. He provided assurance to travelers passing through the state that their journeys would remain safe.
Obaseki revealed this decision after a meeting of the State Security Council convened at the Government House in Benin City, the capital of Edo State. He underscored the commitment to ensuring security during the election and encouraged citizens to actively participate by casting their votes for their preferred candidates. The governor emphasized that a peaceful atmosphere was guaranteed, thanks to the presence of various security agencies committed to safeguarding the voters.
In his words, “We have examined the security situation, especially in relation to the upcoming local government election on September 2nd in Edo State. What sets this election apart is that there will be no restrictions on movement. People will be free to continue their daily routines after voting. Both internal movement within the State and transit for commuters passing through the State will remain unrestricted.”
He further conveyed, “Security measures are of paramount importance. Hence, we have engaged with the different security agencies to assess their readiness and preparedness for the election. Judging from the level of mobilization, we have observed the extensive efforts across various parties, leading to a substantial level of awareness among the people. We anticipate a strong voter turnout. As citizens exercise their voting rights, I urge them to do so peacefully. Elections are not battles.”
Obaseki concluded, “Adequate arrangements have been implemented to ensure the safety of individuals. They can go to their respective polling stations, cast their votes, and return home. If necessary, they can return to await the vote tally and the declaration of election results. However, the utmost priority is maintaining a peaceful environment.”
The Edo State Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Dankwara, echoed the sentiment of preparedness and unity among security agencies for the forthcoming local government election. He stated, “We have diligently readied ourselves for the election, and our coordination with fellow security agencies is seamless. Without a doubt, the election will transpire in a remarkably tranquil manner.”
