In a significant development, Forward Operating Base FORMOSO on Saturday 23 March 2024 discovered and subsequent deactivation of an illegal refining site in Lasukugbene, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State. The operation, dubbed “Operation DELTA SANITY,” uncovered a clandestine operation replete with 25,000 litres of stolen crude oil and an additional 20,000 litres of illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).
This crucial operation, conducted on Saturday, March 23, 2024, marks a notable stride in the ongoing efforts to curb illicit activities within the region. The discovery underscores the persistent challenges posed by illegal refining activities and the theft of crude oil, which have long plagued the Niger Delta area.
The illicit refining site’s deactivation stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts between security forces and local authorities to maintain law and order in the region. It reflects a commitment to upholding regulatory frameworks and combating criminal enterprises that undermine the socio-economic fabric of the affected communities.
Authorities have reiterated their resolve to intensify surveillance and enforcement measures to prevent the resurgence of such illegal operations. Moreover, efforts are underway to investigate further and apprehend individuals involved in this illicit activity, thereby ensuring accountability and deterrence against future infractions.
The successful dismantling of this illegal refining site serves as a pivotal milestone in the broader campaign to promote security, stability, and lawful economic activities in Bayelsa State and the wider Niger Delta region.
