PCRC, NUJ strengthen anti-corruption alliance with EFCC in Enugu

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) and the Corporate Online Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have called for stronger collaboration with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in intensifying public sensitization campaigns against corruption, economic, and financial crimes in Enugu State.

The appeal was made during a courtesy visit to the Acting Zonal Director of the EFCC Enugu Zonal Directorate, ACE I Aisha Abubakar, by PCRC State Coordinator Martins Chiedozie Ugwu and his team.

Ugwu emphasized the need for joint efforts in enlightening the public, especially youths, about the negative impact of corruption. He proposed organizing a state-wide conference to engage community leaders, youth groups, and other stakeholders.

“We want to partner with you to sensitize the people of Enugu State. Our goal is to mobilize communities to join forces with the EFCC in tackling corruption through awareness and education,” Ugwu said.

In response, Abubakar reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to its preventive mandate, noting that sensitization and public engagement remain a critical part of the EFCC’s strategy.

“The scourge of corruption demands constant public education. Our mandate is not only enforcement but also prevention through awareness. We welcome this partnership,” she stated.

Also present at the meeting was Clinton Umeh, Chairman of the Corporate Online Chapel of NUJ, Enugu State Council, who echoed the need for collaboration. Umeh highlighted the role of journalists in shaping public perception and combating youth involvement in cybercrime.

“As media professionals, we engage daily with the public, especially on social media. Many young people are unaware of the legal consequences of their actions. With proper orientation, we can help prevent crime before it starts,” Umeh said.

Abubakar praised the NUJ for its efforts and described the media as “critical stakeholders in the fight against corruption.” She encouraged journalists to share credible intelligence and make use of anonymous reporting channels like the EFCC Eagle Eye app.

She assured both groups of the Commission’s full support and expressed readiness for sustained partnership.

“We are open to collaboration. When you have programmes, we’ll be there. And when we organize ours, you will be invited. Together, we can make a difference,” Abubakar concluded.
