PDP BoT rejects Appeal Court verdict, moves to resolve party crisis

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the recent judgment of the Court of Appeal which invalidated the party’s November 2025 National Convention that produced the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC).

This was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of an Expanded Emergency Meeting of the party’s BoT held on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 10–11, 2026. The communiqué was presented by the BoT Chairman, Adolphus Wabara.

The meeting followed the March 9 ruling of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, which nullified the convention held between November 15 and 16, 2025. The BoT said it disagrees with the judgment and is awaiting legal advice from its counsel on the appropriate course of action.

The Board expressed concern over what it described as avoidable internal leadership disputes and prolonged litigations that have adversely affected the unity and smooth operation of the PDP as Nigeria’s major opposition party.

However, the BoT acknowledged the reconciliation window provided by the court and resolved to explore it in order to restore harmony within the party.

In its resolutions, the Board said it remains mindful of the aspirations of party members intending to contest various positions in the 2027 general elections and stressed the need to stabilise the party structure ahead of the polls.

The BoT, described as the conscience and third-highest decision-making organ of the party, pledged to take immediate steps to reconcile all stakeholders and bring an end to the internal disputes in order to reposition the party for effective participation in the 2027 elections.

To facilitate this process, the Board announced the constitution of a special committee tasked with interfacing with the party’s legal teams and other stakeholders to foster reconciliation and resolve outstanding issues.

The Board also expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued support for the PDP, noting that reports from across the country indicate a surge in membership registration through the ongoing nationwide e-registration exercise.

According to the communiqué, the growing interest in the party underscores its standing as a preferred political platform for many Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The BoT called on all party leaders and members to set aside personal and group interests and unite in the broader interest of the party and the millions of Nigerians who look to the PDP for leadership.

It also commended the efforts of Bala Mohammed, Governor of Bauchi State, and Seyi Makinde, Governor of Oyo State, for their commitment to the stability and progress of the party.

Furthermore, the BoT approved the appointment of Muazu Babangida Aliyu as Secretary of the Board in accordance with Section 32 of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017).

The Board urged Nigerians not to lose hope, assuring that the PDP is working to reposition itself to offer effective leadership and address what it described as the challenges posed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
