Police warn public about fraudulent vehicle auctions, impersonators

The Nigeria Police Force on Sunday 6th August, 2023 issued a crucial advisory to protect the public against a recent surge in deceptive vehicle auction scams and the impersonation of senior officers aimed at duping unsuspecting Nigerians.

According to ACP Olumuyiwa Adejob, the Force Public Relations Officer at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, there have been reports from citizens about individuals falsely posing as representatives of the police authority. These impostors have been seeking financial contributions from people under the pretense of imminent vehicle auctions and promising favors such as contracts from the NPF.

The Nigeria Police Force wants to emphasize that they strictly adhere to a standardized protocol when conducting legitimate vehicle auctions, contracts, and deals, all in accordance with the provisions of extant laws. They clarified that the Inspector General of Police (IGP) does not personally approve or sell property, especially cars, through public auctions. Instead, every auction must follow due process as mandated by the Nigeria Police Act of 2020.

In light of this situation, it is imperative for all residents to exercise caution and refrain from parting with their funds in response to such unauthorized solicitations. The NPF urges everyone to independently verify any information related to police activities, particularly vehicle auctions, through official communication channels.

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejob also listed the verified platforms used by the Nigeria Police Force, which include the official email address at pressforabuja@police.gov.ng and the @PoliceNG social media accounts. By remaining vigilant and consulting these verified sources, the public can thwart potential scams and safeguard their financial well-being.
