Mr. Li Xuda, Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, has emphasized the importance of teaching Chinese language in Nigerian schools to enhance career opportunities for Nigerians in the global market. Speaking at the finals of the 23rd Chinese Bridge—Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, held virtually in Abuja, Mr. Xuda highlighted the growing demand for Chinese language skills in various sectors.
Fluency in Chinese, he noted, significantly improves employment prospects in the international labor market, given China’s expanding influence in trade, technology, and diplomacy. “With China’s growing role globally, the ability to communicate in Chinese is a valuable asset for career progression,” Mr. Xuda stated.
The Chinese Bridge competition aims to foster language and cultural exchange between China and Nigeria, boosting participants’ interest in Chinese and deepening their cultural understanding. Mr. Xuda stressed that learning Chinese not only opens up job opportunities but also strengthens mutual understanding and bilateral relationships, contributing to economic growth and cultural exchange.
Yu Zhangbao, Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, underscored the role of hard work and a conducive learning environment in mastering Chinese. He noted that the competition has inspired many young Nigerians to learn Chinese and understand Chinese culture, thereby enhancing the visibility of Chinese teaching in Nigeria.
Similarly, Zhao Hongling, Dean of the University of Lagos Confucius Institute, highlighted the Chinese Bridge competition as a platform for college students to showcase their Chinese language skills and cultural understanding. He acknowledged the dedication of leaders, teachers, and staff in organizing the event and wished all participants success.
The 23rd season of the Chinese Bridge competition featured 12 college students from across Nigeria. Zhengui emerged as the winner, while Zhou Wenjing and Qi Siheng took second place, and Shen Moli, Chen Peixi, and Tian Jie secured third place. The winner will have the opportunity to travel to China and compete in the global Chinese Bridge competition, furthering their language proficiency and cultural exchange.
