The Senate on Tuesday held its first plenary session of the year, marking the formal resumption of legislative activities following the end-of-year recess.
In line with parliamentary rules, customs and conventions, the Senate adjourned plenary shortly after convening, suspended all legislative business for the day and observed a minute of silence in honour of its late colleague, Senator Godiya Akwashiki.
Senator Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), died on December 31, 2025. Until his death, he served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Air Force.
Meanwhile, the Senate received a request from President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, seeking the confirmation of Mr Oyewole Joseph as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
The President also transmitted several bills to the upper chamber for consideration and passage. The proposed legislations include the Court of Appeal (Amendment) Bill, 2026; the Federal High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and 24 Health Sector (Amendment) Bills. The bills were subsequently referred to the appropriate committees for further legislative action.
Plenary is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.
