Sixteen officers to face military tribunal over indiscipline, breach of service rules

The Armed Forces of Nigeria has announced the arrest of sixteen officers for acts of indiscipline and violations of military service regulations. The officers are to face military justice following the conclusion of an ongoing investigation.

According to a statement signed by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the arrests followed a routine military exercise aimed at upholding discipline and professionalism within the ranks.

Preliminary findings, the statement noted, revealed that the affected officers’ misconduct was largely influenced by grievances over perceived career stagnation, particularly repeated failures in promotion examinations, among other personal issues.

Some of the detained officers were already under investigation or trial for various offences before their recent apprehension. Their conduct, according to military authorities, was found to be incompatible with the ethics and discipline expected of personnel of the Armed Forces.

General Gusau stated that once investigations are completed, the indicted officers will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with established military procedures. He emphasized that the exercise is a routine measure aimed at preserving order, discipline, and loyalty within the military institution.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not tolerate any behaviour that undermines the integrity of the institution or threatens its constitutional role under democratic authority,” the statement read in part.

He further reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ unwavering commitment to professionalism, accountability, and adherence to constitutional responsibilities in the discharge of its duties.
