Tanker Explosion: IGP extends condolences to Niger State, orders strengthening of traffic divisions

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Niger State following the tragic tanker explosion at Dikko Junction on the Abuja-Kaduna Expressway. The incident, which occurred on January 18, 2025, claimed over 73 lives, left many injured, and resulted in the destruction of several shops and properties.

In a statement Force Public Relations Officer Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said the IGP emphasized the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols on the nation’s roads, warning against negligence and non-compliance with traffic regulations that could lead to such catastrophic events.

In response to the tragedy, the IGP has directed all State Commissioners of Police to enhance the efficiency of their Motor Traffic Divisions (MTDs) in collaboration with other traffic management agencies. This move aims to ensure strict enforcement of traffic rules and the maintenance of road safety. The IGP also urged vehicle owners and drivers to maintain roadworthy vehicles and comply with traffic laws to prevent future tragedies.

Praying for the repose of the departed souls, the IGP called on all stakeholders, including transport operators and the public, to prioritize safety and responsibility in their actions to avert similar incidents in the future.
