Tinubu assures Airtel chairman of pro-business policies, investment reforms

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to a pro-business environment, assuring investors of regulatory reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.

According to Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga, the President stated this at a meeting with an Airtel delegation led by Chairman Sunil Bharti Mittal on Thursday in Abuja. He emphasized that Nigeria needs investors to drive economic growth.

Tinubu highlighted plans to review the telecom sector’s regulatory framework to align with global best practices, with a particular focus on protecting infrastructure. He also emphasized the government’s readiness to learn from successful models, citing India as an example.

“The entire ecosystem will be further examined, and if there is anything we can learn from India, we are ready to do so. Nigeria is too important not to embrace reforms that make business work. I am pro-business and will continue to be,” he stated.

The President also reiterated his administration’s tax reforms, assuring investors that fiscal policies will be structured to encourage business growth and economic opportunities.

Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, commended Tinubu’s consistent support for the telecom sector. He noted that the recent designation of fiber optic and undersea cables as critical national assets would enhance security and industry expansion, with the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) already enforcing the policy.

Mittal praised Tinubu’s economic reforms, comparing them to India’s transformative policies in 1991. He acknowledged the boldness of floating the naira and removing the petrol subsidy, describing them as difficult but necessary decisions that will shape Nigeria’s economic future.

“Your first term as President will mark a watershed moment in Nigeria’s development. The world recognizes the bold steps you have taken,” Mittal said, adding that investor confidence is returning, with Nigerians abroad also reconsidering local investments.

Mittal assured that Airtel remains committed to expanding its presence in Nigeria, supporting the government’s digital and economic transformation agenda.
