President Bola Tinubu has called for deeper cooperation between Nigeria and Denmark in livestock development, education, and sustainable agriculture, describing the sectors as critical to job creation, food security, and rural development.
Speaking Tuesday at the State House, Abuja, while hosting Queen Mary of Denmark on her first visit to Nigeria, President Tinubu said Nigeria is committed to partnerships that will modernise its dairy and livestock economy, improve veterinary practices, and support peaceful co-existence between farmers and herders.
“We can convert that friction into structured economic opportunity and provide education pathways—even for farmers and herders,” the President said. “We can stabilise communities, grow our food systems, and lift millions out of poverty.”
The Danish monarch, visiting in her capacity as Patron of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), was co-hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu. The President commended Denmark’s support for internally displaced persons and its private sector contributions to Nigeria’s agriculture, maritime, and infrastructure development through firms such as A.P. Moller–Maersk and Grundfos.
Highlighting Nigeria’s projected population growth to 400 million by 2050, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s focus on demographic investment through reforms in education, healthcare, agriculture, and employment as outlined in the Renewed Hope Agenda.
On social development, Queen Mary and the First Lady discussed efforts to tackle the out-of-school children crisis and enhance school feeding programmes. Senator Tinubu stressed the need to integrate Islamic schools into Nigeria’s formal education system.
Queen Mary expressed sympathy over the humanitarian situation in Nigeria’s northeast and said she is exploring investment opportunities in Nigeria’s green economy, trade, and initiatives supporting women and child health. She also plans to visit the A.P. Moller–Maersk terminal in Lagos as part of her business engagement.
Denmark is expected to assume the presidency of the EU Council and hold a seat on the UN Security Council from 2025 to 2026.
