In a solemn announcement today, President Bola Tinubu conveyed his profound shock and deep sorrow at the passing of Emeritus Professor Umaru Shehu, CFR, a distinguished Nigerian educationist and a pioneering figure in the medical field in Northern Nigeria. The eminent scholar, born in 1930 in Maiduguri, Borno State, passed away on Monday, leaving a legacy that has significantly impacted the nation and beyond.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu expressed his heartfelt condolences and described the demise of Emeritus Professor Shehu as a momentous loss to the nation. He emphasized that with his passing, a glorious chapter of illustrious service to Nigeria, Nigerians, and humanity as a whole had come to a close.

In a tribute to the late professor, President Tinubu said, “Emeritus Professor Shehu was a giant, even among that legendary generation of pioneering indigenous professionals in our country, and the story of his life is saturated with many first, golden steps across the realms of medical practice, school administration, and humanitarian services.”

The late Emeritus Professor of Medicine was renowned for his meritorious service to Nigeria and his groundbreaking contributions to the fields of health and medical education worldwide. President Tinubu expressed gratitude for the pride that Emeritus Professor Shehu had brought to Nigeria through his remarkable achievements and innovative approaches to healthcare and medical education.

Having received his education at prestigious institutions including the defunct University College-Ibadan, the University of Liverpool, and the University of London, Emeritus Professor Shehu dedicated his life to serving Nigeria’s medical and higher education institutions. He held key positions as Deputy Vice Chancellor, Vice Chancellor, and Sole Administrator at institutions such as Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Nigeria, Nsukka; and the University of Maiduguri. His mentorship and teaching left an indelible mark on generations of medical practitioners both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom.

Furthermore, Emeritus Professor Shehu’s contributions extended to the global stage, where he served as the Country Coordinator of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Nigeria and Ethiopia.

President Tinubu extended his heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of Borno State, the family of the deceased statesman, the Nigerian medical community, and countless others who are mourning the loss of this iconic Nigerian figure.
