Tinubu re-elected as ECOWAS Chairman

President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government.

According to Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu mandate was extended at the 65th Ordinary Session held on Sunday, in a bid to maintain continuity and meet targets on security, reconciliation, and development.

President Tinubu was first elected to this position in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023. In his acceptance speech, he emphasized his commitment to consolidating democratic values and upholding the interests of ECOWAS, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

The President announced the appointment of Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Togolese President Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic.

“I have appointed the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, to please become our Special Envoy to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic, along with the President of Togo, Faure Gnassingbé, to work around the clock with our brothers in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger Republic, and to coordinate with me and the ECOWAS Commission, where necessary,” said Tinubu.

He reaffirmed his dedication to serving ECOWAS and building on democratic values and structures.

President Tinubu also called on ECOWAS leaders to work towards establishing a regional standby force to enhance security and economic advancement in the face of growing regional threats.
