Tinubu urges immediate resource mobilization for Nigeria’s climate goals

At the Climate Security Summit in Abuja on Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts and resource mobilization to achieve Nigeria’s climate targets.

Represented by the Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, Tinubu called for accelerated actions from all stakeholders to counter the nation’s climate challenges.

In his address, the President warned of the “present and undeniable danger” climate change poses, noting its impact nationwide, from rising sea levels threatening coastal areas to drought exacerbating conflicts among farmers and herders. He cited Nigeria’s commitment under the Paris Agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent by 2030 as a key part of the nation’s climate action.

Tinubu highlighted that climate threats, including extreme weather events like floods and heatwaves, are straining the country’s economy and endangering infrastructure. “Climate crises are existential threats to our nation and the world,” he said, urging swift action.

The Director-General of the National Council on Climate Change, Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, also spoke at the summit. She noted that while a climate change fund has been legally established to support resilience efforts, it has yet to be fully operationalized. Maduekwe emphasized that the meeting aimed to prepare strategies for Nigeria’s representation at COP 29, where the country hopes to secure beneficial outcomes for its climate agenda.
