The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) on Sunday confirmed that one of its Abuja–Kaduna Train Service (AKTS) trips was involved in a derailment. The incident occurred at about 11:09 a.m. around kilometre 49, between Kubwa Station and Asham Station in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement signed by the NRC Managing Director, Kayode Opeifa, the corporation said emergency rescue teams, medical personnel, and nearby hospitals had already been mobilised to provide immediate support to affected passengers. He added that a full complement of security operatives was on ground to secure the scene and ensure the safety of passengers.
“All efforts are ongoing to move all passengers on board the affected train safely back to Abuja,” the statement read. “We kindly urge passengers and members of the public to bear with us at this moment.”

The NRC further assured that an investigation would be carried out to ascertain the cause of the derailment and prevent a recurrence.
The Abuja–Kaduna corridor is one of the busiest rail routes in Nigeria, providing a vital alternative to road transport for commuters between the Federal Capital Territory and Kaduna State. The NRC has in recent years stepped up efforts to restore confidence in the service following past incidents, including attacks and disruptions.
No fatalities or major injuries had been officially confirmed at the time of filing this report. Rescue and evacuation operations were still ongoing.
