UK donates N1 billion in equipment, trains Nigerian troops on counter-insurgency in Northeast Nigeria

In a significant boost to Nigeria’s counter-insurgency efforts, the United Kingdom has donated specialized military equipment worth approximately N1 billion (£450,000) to the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The non-lethal, highly technical equipment will enhance the capacity of troops stationed in the country’s Northeast, where they face violent extremist organizations. This initiative forms part of the broader UK-Nigeria defense partnership focused on bolstering Nigeria’s security framework and supporting the fight against insurgency.

At the handover ceremony held in Maiduguri, the Joint Task Force North East (JTF NE) Theatre Commander, Major General Wahidi Shaibu, formally received the equipment. Also present was Colonel Martin Leach, Deputy Head of British Defence Staff (West Africa) and Commander of British Military Training Teams in Nigeria.

Colonel Leach underscored the UK’s steadfast commitment to Nigeria’s security, stating, “I am delighted to be here today to hand over this equipment and mark another development in the strong partnership between the United Kingdom and Nigeria. The UK stands with Nigeria in the continued fight against violent extremist organizations in the North East.”

The donation is complemented by a comprehensive training program delivered by a 20-member team from the British Army, who are currently living and working in Maiduguri. The training focuses on vital skills needed by Nigerian troops to counter the evolving threats posed by extremist groups in the region.

The course covers counter-insurgency techniques, advanced tactical maneuvers, and specialized intelligence gathering strategies aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness.

According to Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, Senior Communications & Public Diplomacy Officer at the British High Commission’s Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), this training program aligns with the UK’s ongoing commitment to Nigeria’s security and stability.

Seven additional courses will be rolled out over the coming months, concluding in February 2025. The curriculum for these courses will focus on refining Nigerian Army personnel’s expertise in critical areas such as counter-improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and intelligence analysis, ensuring that they are equipped to meet emerging challenges.

Beyond training, UK personnel are also embedded within the Theatre Counter-IED Coordination Cell in Maiduguri, collaborating with Nigerian counterparts to gather intelligence on terror networks.

This initiative is aimed at dismantling the logistical and operational structures of these groups, which have increasingly targeted civilians and soldiers with IEDs in the Northeast.

This donation and training package highlight the UK’s commitment to Nigeria’s fight against insurgency and signal an ongoing investment in Nigeria’s security capabilities.

The British High Commission emphasized that these measures will not only enhance military readiness but also strengthen the defense partnership between Nigeria and the UK in their shared mission of regional peace and stability.
