UN reaffirms peace, dialogue, reconciliation as pillars of growth

The United Nations has restated that peace, dialogue, and reconciliation remain central to achieving sustainable growth and development across the globe.

UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Fall, made the call on Monday night in Abuja during the commemoration of the International Day of Peace, observed annually on September 21.

The event, themed “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the #GlobalGoals”, was held at the German Embassy in Abuja. Established by the UN General Assembly in 1981, the day is marked to strengthen the ideals of peace among nations and peoples.

Fall described the commemoration as a “renewed promise of peace, dignity and the future,” stressing the need for trust, solidarity and collective action in addressing global challenges. He noted that Nigeria’s diversity and resilience are assets, but also highlighted the conflicts and displacement that continue to test its peacebuilding process.

German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Gunther, underscored the importance of preventive diplomacy and inclusive governance, citing the establishment of the UN Peacebuilding Commission, Fund and Support Office as key instruments in sustaining peace.

Director-General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Joseph Ochogwu, said the day coincided with the institute’s 25th anniversary, reaffirming its collaboration with ECOWAS, the African Union and the UN system on peacebuilding efforts.

Also speaking, Dr. Joshua Gana of the House Committee on Peacebuilding and Social Cohesion stressed the need to “silence the guns, bridge divides and build societies rooted in justice, dignity and mutual respect.”

The ceremony featured keynote addresses from peace and security stakeholders, including representatives of the National Peace Committee and the Embassy of Korea. A symbolic release of doves marked the highlight of the event, signifying Nigeria’s commitment to non-violence, dialogue, and national reconciliation.
