In a concerted effort to bolster access to quality healthcare services in Nigeria, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has teamed up with the Kebbi State government in a groundbreaking initiative. This initiative aims to address the critical issue of inadequate access to electricity in healthcare facilities by partnering with Wecaresolar, a renowned organization specializing in solar energy solutions.
Under this partnership, 299 solar suitcases have been strategically installed across 203 primary healthcare facilities in Kebbi State, effectively providing essential lighting where electricity access was previously unavailable. These solar suitcases, designed by Wecaresolar, offer a sustainable and reliable source of energy, enabling healthcare providers to deliver crucial services round the clock.

The impact of these installations has been remarkable, as evidenced by a recent report indicating a substantial increase in healthcare service utilization. Within a span of just nine months following the initial installations, there has been a notable surge in deliveries at these healthcare facilities. The number has surged by 26%, soaring from 2,221 to 2,799 deliveries per month. This surge underscores the profound effect of reliable electricity access on healthcare delivery and maternal care outcomes.
Furthermore, as part of the USAID Integrated Health Program, more than 500 healthcare workers have undergone comprehensive training sessions. These sessions focus on equipping healthcare personnel with the necessary skills for the efficient utilization and maintenance of the solar suitcases. Such capacity-building efforts are pivotal in ensuring the sustainability and optimal functioning of the installed solar energy solutions.
This collaborative endeavor between USAID, the Kebbi State government, and Wecaresolar exemplifies a commitment to innovative solutions aimed at enhancing healthcare access and outcomes in underserved communities. By harnessing the power of solar energy, coupled with targeted capacity-building initiatives, this partnership is poised to make enduring strides in improving the quality of healthcare services for communities in Kebbi State and beyond.
