Zulum vows crackdown as insecurity resurges in Borno

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has reassured residents that the security situation in Borno State remains under control despite a recent resurgence of attacks, pledging decisive action against insurgents.

In a statewide broadcast on Thursday, the governor acknowledged concerns over renewed violence in parts of the state but maintained that authorities are firmly in charge of the situation.

Zulum attributed the spike in attacks to intensified military operations that have dislodged insurgents from their strongholds, forcing them to disperse and attempt infiltration into communities.

He said security agencies are implementing coordinated strategies to counter the threats and prevent the insurgents from regaining ground.

“The overall security environment, while tested, remains under control, and we are doing everything possible to protect lives and property,” the governor said.

Zulum noted that while significant progress has been made over the past seven years in restoring stability and rebuilding conflict-affected communities, the threat of insurgency had not been completely eliminated.

He called for increased collaboration between residents and security agencies, urging the public to provide timely intelligence and report suspicious activities.

The governor also warned against aiding insurgents through information sharing, shelter, or logistics, stressing that such actions would attract severe legal consequences.

“Those who collaborate with these criminals are enemies of the state and will face the full weight of the law,” he said.

Zulum commended the Nigerian Armed Forces and other security agencies for their sacrifices, while paying tribute to fallen soldiers and civilian volunteers.

He expressed appreciation to Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving funding to support operations of the Multinational Joint Task Force and other anti-insurgency campaigns, and thanked Kashim Shettima for representing the president during a recent sympathy visit to the state.

The governor further urged political actors to avoid exploiting the security situation for political gain as the political season approaches, warning that divisions could undermine progress made in stabilising the state.

“As we look to the future and choose a new leader for our state, let us pray for a worthy successor,” he said.

Zulum also called on residents to remain vigilant during the closing days of Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid celebrations, advising them to stay alert and report suspicious movements.

Reaffirming his administration’s resolve, he declared: “Borno shall not fall into the hands of insurgents.”
