Tinubu urges unity, fairness as APC begins nationwide primaries

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity, internal democracy, and sportsmanship as the All Progressives Congress (APC) commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2026 general elections.

In a statement marking the start of the party’s primaries, President Tinubu described the exercise as a defining moment in the APC’s political evolution, noting that the party is entering its fourth election cycle since its formation.

He said the primaries—beginning with House of Representatives aspirants and culminating in the presidential primary scheduled for 25 May 2026—should be viewed not merely as a selection process for candidates, but as a test of the party’s unity, resilience, and shared political ideals.

The President recalled that the APC was founded on principles of progressive politics, consensus-building, and selfless service, urging members to uphold these values during the conduct of the primaries.

He acknowledged ongoing efforts within the party to produce consensus candidates in line with the Electoral Act 2026 and the APC constitution, describing the initiative as a constructive approach that could reduce internal conflict and strengthen cohesion.

While commending progress made in that direction, Tinubu encouraged stakeholders to maximise opportunities for consensus where possible, while ensuring a smooth and unified process.

He stressed that where consensus fails, the primaries must be conducted in a peaceful and disciplined manner, urging aspirants and delegates to avoid rancour and conduct themselves with maturity.

“Election is an essential ingredient of democracy,” the President said, adding that participants must accept outcomes in good faith, with winners showing humility and losers demonstrating sportsmanship.

Tinubu warned against divisive or “do-or-die” political tendencies, insisting that internal contests should not weaken party unity. He noted that even unsuccessful aspirants remain vital to the party’s collective strength and should be carried along through reconciliation efforts.

He further urged party leaders and aspirants to ensure fairness, transparency, and equal opportunity for all contestants, stressing that credible processes are essential to sustaining trust within the party.

The President also placed emphasis on the inclusion of women and young people, describing both groups as critical to Nigeria’s democratic and developmental future. He called on party stakeholders to give them meaningful consideration in the primaries.

On security arrangements, Tinubu directed the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to maintain professionalism and confine their role strictly to ensuring peace and order during the exercise, warning against interference in the electoral process.

He concluded by wishing all aspirants a successful outing, expressing optimism that the primaries would produce candidates capable of advancing the APC’s prospects in the 2026 general elections.
