Nigeria, China strengthen partnership on power and infrastructure

Nigeria and China have renewed efforts to deepen bilateral cooperation in power, infrastructure and industrial development following high-level discussions between the Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP), Joseph Tegbe, and the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, in Abuja.

The meeting focused on expanding collaboration under the Nigeria-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework and identifying practical initiatives capable of accelerating Nigeria’s economic transformation and modernization agenda.

During the talks, Ambassador Yu congratulated Tegbe on his appointment and commended his role in advancing relations between both countries. He reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development goals and pledged continued cooperation in implementing agreements reached at the recent Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit in Beijing.

The envoy emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration in electricity generation, power infrastructure and other strategic development projects, noting that such partnerships are vital to strengthening bilateral ties and delivering tangible benefits to citizens of both nations.

According to him, China remains committed to working closely with Nigeria to advance projects that promote economic growth, industrialisation and sustainable development.

In his response, Tegbe described China as one of Nigeria’s most significant development partners and reiterated the Federal Government’s determination to deepen engagement with Beijing across critical sectors of the economy.

He expressed appreciation for China’s longstanding support for Nigeria’s socio-economic development and pledged closer collaboration with the Chinese Embassy and relevant institutions to attract investments and drive mutually beneficial partnerships.

Tegbe identified power infrastructure, manufacturing and modern agriculture as key areas where expanded cooperation could unlock economic opportunities, create jobs and improve living standards for Nigerians.

He added that stronger Nigeria-China relations would not only support Nigeria’s development objectives but also contribute to broader efforts aimed at advancing modernization and sustainable development across Africa.

The meeting comes as the Nigerian government intensifies efforts to attract strategic investments and partnerships to address infrastructure deficits, improve electricity supply and accelerate industrial growth under its ongoing economic reform programme.

Analysts regard China as a critical partner in Nigeria’s development drive, with both countries maintaining extensive cooperation in transportation, energy, telecommunications and industrial projects over the years.
