The upgraded Geographical Information System laboratory of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which has been renamed as NEMA Geo-Spatial Centre was today commissioned by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Sen George Akume.
The ceremony, held on Wednesday 28th February 2024 in Abuja, marks a significant milestone in the Federal Government’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life in Nigeria.
In his address, Senator Akume emphasized the global challenge posed by escalating disasters, ranging from droughts and floods to desertification and communal conflicts over land use. He underscored Nigeria’s susceptibility to these challenges and reiterated the government’s dedication to effective disaster management.
Senator Akume reaffirmed the Federal Government’s pledge to bolster the public service’s productivity and responsiveness to citizens’ needs. He highlighted President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to national welfare and development.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation commended NEMA for establishing the Geo-Spatial Centre and urged the agency and its partners to maximize the facility’s capabilities to advance disaster management efforts in the country.
Director General of NEMA, Mustapha Habib Ahmed, expressed gratitude to the President and the Federal Executive Council for their support in upgrading the GIS facility. He emphasized the pivotal role of the Geo-Spatial Centre in research, planning, and response to disasters, underlining its significance in fostering resilient communities.
Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onaiwu, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, commended NEMA’s efforts and assured continued legislative support for disaster management initiatives.
Likewise, Honorable Joseph Bassey, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, pledged ongoing support for NEMA’s endeavors in disaster management.
Distinguished guests at the event included Adebomehin Adeyemi, Surveyor General of the Federation; Engr. Clem Nze, Director General of Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency; Mr. Trond Jensen, Head of UNOCHA in Nigeria; and Honorable Nasir Isa Kwarra, representing the Chairman of the National Population Commission.
