Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the death of Kabiru Ibrahim, who succumbed to severe beatings and torture by police in Soro village, Bauchi state. Ibrahim, accused of stealing sachets of noodles, died on Saturday at a teaching hospital in Bauchi. This incident highlights a troubling pattern of human rights violations by police, where victims are tortured to extract confessions or bribes for release.
Amnesty International’s investigation revealed that Ibrahim was tortured excessively because his family could not afford to pay the demanded bribe. In similar cases, detainees unable to pay bribes face escalated torture. The organization urges an immediate and thorough investigation to address these abuses and ensure justice for the victims.
