Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to launch an immediate and transparent investigation into the alleged extrajudicial killing of a young man in Delta State.
In a statement, the rights group said the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, involved a police officer identified as ASP Nuhu Usman of the Nigeria Police Force.
Amnesty International identified the victim as Mene Ogidi, describing him as unarmed and posing no threat at the time of the shooting. The organisation condemned the killing, stating that it represented a grave violation of the right to life and must not go unpunished.
“The Nigerian authorities must ensure that the incident is promptly, thoroughly and transparently investigated, and that the findings are made public,” the group said.
It stressed that the use of force by law enforcement officers must align with international human rights standards, noting that lethal force should only be deployed as a last resort to protect life.
The organisation warned that the case underscores persistent concerns over accountability within Nigeria’s policing system, cautioning against what it described as a potential return to a period marked by widespread allegations of police brutality.
Amnesty International urged the government to take decisive steps to end unlawful killings and ensure that officers found culpable are held accountable under the law.
