Benue killings must stop —IPCR  warns of national breakdown

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has raised alarm over the unrelenting violence in Benue State, warning that Nigeria cannot afford to remain on a path defined by bloodshed and destruction.

Reacting to the latest attacks in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area, which reportedly claimed over 200 lives, the IPCR described the killings as a national tragedy that demands urgent and collective action.

In a statement issued Monday, June 16, 2025, by its Director General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Institute condemned the attacks and called on all stakeholders to rise beyond rhetoric and actively engage in efforts to end the cycle of violence.

“The situation has reached a boiling point. Nigeria cannot continue on this trajectory of bloodshed,” Dr. Ochogwu said. “The human cost is staggering—lives lost, communities displaced, and deep psychological trauma inflicted.”

He emphasized that the crisis is not just a humanitarian emergency but also a serious economic and social threat. According to him, continued attacks have disrupted livelihoods, led to business closures, and deterred investment in affected communities.

Ochogwu stressed the need for a multi-stakeholder response involving the government, security agencies, traditional rulers, civil society, and local communities. He called for robust dialogue mechanisms to address the root causes of conflict, including poverty, unemployment, and lack of access to education and healthcare.

“The security forces have a critical role to play, but they must be properly resourced and operate within the bounds of the law,” he stated. “Equally important is the promotion of effective local governance. Local governments must be empowered to mediate disputes, respond quickly to tensions, and deliver essential services.”

The IPCR called for the establishment of permanent dialogue platforms to facilitate open communication between communities and government, as well as targeted capacity-building for local authorities to prevent and manage conflicts.

The renewed appeal by the IPCR follows widespread condemnation of the killings by federal and state authorities, including President Bola Tinubu and Governor Hyacinth Alia, who have both described the attacks as inhumane and evil.

As the country continues to grapple with security challenges across several regions, the IPCR urged Nigerians to unite behind a common goal of peace and national stability.
