Christmas: IPCR calls for peace, unity nationwide

As Nigerians join millions worldwide to celebrate Christmas, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has urged citizens to embrace peace, unity, tolerance and mutual respect during the festive season.

In a Christmas message signed by its Director-General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Institute described the period as a time for reflection, reconciliation and renewed commitment to peaceful coexistence. It said the core values associated with Christmas—love, compassion and forgiveness—are vital to addressing Nigeria’s prevailing security and social challenges.

The IPCR emphasized that peacebuilding is a collective responsibility requiring the active involvement of individuals, communities and institutions. It noted that sustainable peace can only be achieved where justice, equity and fairness prevail, adding that peace should be understood not merely as the absence of conflict but as the presence of social justice.

Highlighting its mandate, the Institute said it has continued to promote peace and stability across the country through research, policy advisory services and direct interventions in conflict-prone areas. It disclosed that thousands of mediators, peace practitioners and community leaders have been trained under its programmes, helping to prevent the escalation of disputes and foster harmony in various communities.

The IPCR also called on leaders at all levels to prioritize peace and national cohesion, particularly during the festive period, while urging citizens to show compassion to the vulnerable and marginalized.

It reminded Christians that the birth of Jesus Christ, celebrated on December 25, symbolizes peace and peaceful coexistence, values it described as essential for national development. The Institute further advised Nigerians traveling for the celebrations to act as ambassadors of peace by promoting messages of love, tolerance and understanding.

According to the IPCR, a peaceful environment remains a key driver of development, noting that nations enjoying stability tend to progress faster than those burdened by conflict. It therefore urged Nigerians to use the Christmas season to recommit themselves to building a more inclusive and harmonious society.
