Court dismisses Bobrisky’s ₦200 million rights suit against EFCC

  • Says claims lack merit, no evidence of rights violation

The Federal High Court in Lagos has dismissed a fundamental rights lawsuit filed by Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, popularly known as Bobrisky, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The suit, which sought ₦200 million in damages for alleged harassment and rights violations, was struck out by Justice Alexander Owoeye on Thursday, November 28, 2024.

In his judgment, Justice Owoeye ruled that Bobrisky failed to present credible evidence to support his claims of unlawful arrest and detention by the EFCC. The court also declined to grant Bobrisky’s request for a perpetual injunction restraining the EFCC and its agents from further actions against him.

“Having evaluated the evidence placed before this Court by the Applicant, it is evident that the Applicant has failed to provide credible evidence to justify the award of the declaratory and injunctive reliefs sought by him,” Justice Owoeye stated.

Bobrisky had also included the National Assembly as a respondent in the suit, alleging legislative overreach. However, the court dismissed all claims and declined to award any damages against the EFCC.

The case stems from Bobrisky’s arrest by the EFCC on April 4, 2024, over alleged currency abuse, which led to his conviction and a six-month sentence handed down by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on April 12, 2024.
