In a significant development, the Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully prosecuted and secured convictions for thirty-three individuals involved in internet fraud. The convictions were pronounced by esteemed Justices Ladiran Akintola, Adebukola Olajide, and M.O. Ishola of the Oyo State High Court, Ibadan; Justice B.B. Adebowale of the Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta, and Justice Uche Agomoh of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, Oyo State.
The convicted individuals, including Amos Temitope Taiwo, Fatai Habeeb Mayowa, Lateef Aremu, Abiona Itunuoluwa Solomon, Olamijulo Abiodun Kayode, and others, were arraigned on separate one-count charges related to cybercrimes.
The charges ranged from online impersonation to fraudulent activities conducted on various platforms. Notably, the lone-count separate charge presented to the court emphasized the case of Opaleye Ramadan Olanrewaju, who falsely represented himself as a white woman named Catherine from the United States of America on Instagram with the intent to defraud.
All thirty-three defendants pleaded “guilty” to the charges brought against them. Consequently, the prosecution counsels presented comprehensive facts of the cases, along with incriminating documents, before the respective courts. They urged the courts to convict and sentence the defendants in accordance with the charges.
Following due consideration, the Justices, after listening to both parties, convicted and sentenced the defendants accordingly. Amos Temitope Taiwo received eighteen months of imprisonment, while Olasupo and Babatunde were sentenced to one year each. A significant number of defendants, including Aremu, Solomon, Adedimeji, Sunday, Alabi, Ayomide, Mumeen, Olanrewaju, Olonitola, Obinna, Tajudeen, Onoapor, Opeyemi, Wemimo, Pelumi, Okwise, Olakunle, Adegoke, Oluwaseyi, Olanrewaju, Asekoni, David, and Tobiloba, were assigned six months of community service each.
Furthermore, Mayowa received a sentence of eight months of community service, while Kayode, Ogbemudia, Olaide, Balogun, and Ojo were mandated to complete three months of community service each, and Ayoola received a two-month community service sentence.
The courts, in their rulings, ordered the convicts to restitute their victims and forfeit all recovered items, including eight exotic vehicles, to the Federal Government of Nigeria. These convicted individuals, apprehended in various locations in Oyo and Ogun states by EFCC operatives, have commenced serving their sentences at the Correctional Centre.
The convictions underscore the EFCC’s commitment to combating cybercrimes and ensuring that justice is served in cases of internet-related offenses.
