In a strategic move to bolster regional integration and economic activity, a high-level Nigerian delegation met with Benin Republic officials on May 21, 2024, in Segbana. The discussions aimed to expedite the reopening of the Segbana-Tsamiya border post in Kebbi State.
Key Nigerian figures in attendance included Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Kebbi State Governor Dr. Nasir Idris, Comptroller General of Nigeria Customs Service Adewale Adeniyi, Director of Home Finance at the Ministry of Finance Alhaji Ali Mohammed, and Director General of the Border Communities Development Agency Dr. Dakorinama Alabo George.
The meeting covered logistics, security, and economic impacts of the border reopening. Feasibility studies highlighted benefits and challenges, while timelines and necessary infrastructure were discussed to ensure smooth operations.
Comptroller General Adeniyi emphasized the importance of the collaboration, noting efforts to facilitate trade and economic relations through Northern Borders. Benin Customs Director General Adidjatou Hassan echoed this sentiment, highlighting the strengthened bilateral ties and commitment to secure and efficient border operations.
Minister Tuggar cited directives from Presidents Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Patrice Talon to enhance social and economic interactions. Governor Idris praised the initiative, emphasizing the longstanding beneficial relationship between Kebbi State and the Republic of Benin.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to ongoing collaboration, with a follow-up meeting scheduled for June 2024 to monitor progress and resolve outstanding issues. A bi-national committee was also established to ensure efficient implementation of the border reopening efforts.
