FG, EU collaborate to combat environmental waste

The Federal Government of Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have embarked on a collaborative effort aimed at reducing environmental waste in Nigeria. This strategic partnership underscores a shared commitment to addressing the pressing global challenge of waste management and promoting sustainable consumption and production patterns.

This year marks a significant milestone as the EU joins forces with the Federal Ministry of Environment and other stakeholders worldwide to observe the International Zero Waste Day in Nigeria. This occasion, proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly, serves as a platform to raise awareness and drive action towards minimizing waste generation.

During a commemorative event held in Abuja with the theme “Beat Waste,” Deputy Ambassador Zissimos Vergos of the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS emphasized the imperative of waste prevention. He highlighted the staggering statistics of global waste generation and underscored the urgent need for enhanced waste management infrastructure and practices.

Vergos emphasized the multifaceted impact of waste pollution on human well-being, economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability. He warned of the dire consequences if decisive action is not taken promptly, projecting a significant increase in annual municipal solid waste generation by 2050.

As part of their collaborative efforts, the European Union has spearheaded initiatives such as the Global Alliance on Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency (GACERE), aimed at fostering international cooperation to combat plastic pollution and promote circular economy principles. Furthermore, the EU has been actively engaged in supporting the development and implementation of key policies and regulations, including the National Policy on Waste Battery Management and the National Environmental (Plastic Waste Control) Regulations.

Highlighting ongoing partnerships with the Federal Ministry of Environment and key stakeholders, Vergos emphasized the importance of collective action in advancing circular economy policies and practices at both national and sub-national levels. The unveiling of the National Circular Economy Roadmap signifies another milestone in the joint efforts towards achieving inclusive and sustainable growth for the Nigerian economy.

The collaboration between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the European Union underscores a shared commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development, serving as a beacon of hope for addressing the global waste crisis.
