The Federal Government has officially initiated the presentation of assorted food items to State Governments for distribution as palliatives to vulnerable individuals, in accordance with the directive issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This measure aims to alleviate the adverse effects of the prevailing global economic challenges being experienced within the nation.
It is pertinent to recall that the President had sanctioned the allocation of 42,000 metric tons of assorted grains from the National Strategic Reserve. These provisions are intended to be distributed among vulnerable individuals across all states and within every Local Government Area.
Subsequent to the directive, concerted efforts were undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, alongside the Office of the National Security Adviser and the National Emergency Management Agency, in the meticulous planning and transportation of these food supplies.
Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency, acting on behalf of the Federal Government, presided over the formal presentation to Dr. Ahmad Aliyu, the Governor of Sokoto State. This event was attended by Senator Abubakar Kyari, the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security; Alhaji Idris Mohammed Malagi, the Minister of Information and National Orientation; and Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security.
In his address, Senator Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, commended NEMA and the security agencies for their diligence and collaborative efforts in ensuring the secure delivery of these essential items. He also symbolically inaugurated the distribution process.
Alhaji Malagi, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, underscored that these food provisions stand as evidence of the commitment made by President Tinubu and the Federal Government to enhance the lives and welfare of Nigerians.
Expressing gratitude, Governor Aliyu acknowledged President Tinubu and the Federal Government for their provision of palliatives. He confirmed the receipt of the allocated items from NEMA and pledged adherence to the prescribed distribution framework.
Mrs. Umar, the Director-General of NEMA, elucidated on the items dispatched to Sokoto State, comprising 506 metric tons of maize (equivalent to 10,120 50kg bags), 598 metric tons of sorghum (equivalent to 11,960 50kg bags), and 216.5 metric tons of millet (equivalent to 4,324 50kg bags). She also furnished details regarding the involvement of stakeholders at the Local Government Areas and the allocation percentages designated for various vulnerable groups.
