Guterres urges unity against hatred and discrimination

In observance of the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has made a poignant call for global solidarity against all manifestations of hatred and discrimination.

Delivering his address on the International Day of Reflection on the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda, observed annually on April 7th, Guterres’ message was conveyed by Mohamed Malick Fall, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Nigeria, during a solemn event organized by the High Commission of Rwanda in Nigeria.

Guterres emphasized, “On this solemn day of remembrance, let’s pledge to stand as one against all forms of hatred and discrimination.” He stressed the imperative to ensure that the atrocities that unfolded on April 7, 1994, are never forgotten and, more importantly, never replicated anywhere in the world.

Ambassador Christophe Bazivamo, the Rwandan High Commissioner to Nigeria, echoed Guterres’ sentiments, emphasizing the necessity for a collective effort in combating hate ideology and all variants of discrimination. “Let’s renew our commitment to peace and unity,” he urged, underscoring the ongoing significance of fostering harmony and understanding among nations and peoples.
