Flood Predictions: Gwagwalada, Garki, Wuse, and Surrounding areas to experience heavy floods

Gwagwalada, Garki 1, Garki 2, Wuse 1, and Wuse 2 in the Federal Capital Territory are likely to witness heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding between July 11th and 15th, 2024. This warning comes from the National Flood Early Warning Systems (FEWS) Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment in Abuja.

In a statement Head of Public Affairs Nkechi Isa said neighboring states to the FCT, including Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Kaduna, may also experience heavy rainfall and potential flooding during this period.

In response to the early warning, Mrs. Florence Dawon Wenegieme, Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), has placed divers and the Department’s Search and Rescue Team on alert. She has also notified the Local Emergency Management Council (LEMC) in the six area councils of the FCT to prepare for possible flash or river flooding.

Mrs. Wenegieme urged pedestrians and motorists to avoid driving through pools of water and to seek alternative routes or wait for water levels to recede. She also advised residents living near water channels to relocate and encouraged the public to avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste and to clear drainage systems to ensure free water flow.

Residents are reminded to use the 112 emergency toll-free number in the event of an emergency.
