Improved pipeline security boosts Nigeria’s oil output — NNPC

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has attributed a significant rebound in Nigeria’s crude oil production to enhanced pipeline security measures across the Niger Delta.

Speaking at the Parliamentary Roundtable on the State of Pipelines Security held at the National Assembly, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, disclosed that national output rose from a historic low of 960,000 barrels per day in 2022 to an average of 1.71 million barrels per day, with peak production reaching 1.84 million barrels per day in 2025.

Ojulari explained that the improvement followed the adoption of an integrated energy security framework for pipelines in the Niger Delta. He described the approach as a coordinated system combining legislative and executive policy alignment, actionable intelligence, security deployment, regulatory oversight, industry collaboration, and community-based surveillance.

According to him, the strategy has effectively addressed the persistent challenges of oil theft and pipeline vandalism, leading to increased production and renewed investor confidence in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, represented by Jimoh Ibrahim, called for sustained collaboration among relevant stakeholders to resolve outstanding issues affecting production growth.

Similarly, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, represented by Julius Ihonvbere, urged participants to assess progress made so far to ensure fairness, transparency, and equitable outcomes.

The roundtable, convened by the Joint Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Petroleum Resources, brought together key government officials, including the National Security Adviser, Minister of Defence, and representatives of regulatory agencies in the oil and gas sector.

Security chiefs, including the Chief of Defence Staff, Inspector General of Police, Director General of the Department of State Services, Commandant General of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as private security operators, also presented updates on efforts to safeguard critical oil infrastructure.

NNPC Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining production growth through strengthened security architecture and continued collaboration with stakeholders.
