NAPTIP rescues trafficked teen, launches investigation

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has taken custody of a 17-year-old Nigerian girl in connection with a suspected human trafficking case.

The victim, an indigene of Obingwa Local Government Area in Abia State, arrived in Nigeria on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at about 17:00 hours. She was accompanied by the Charge d’Affaires of the Nigerian Embassy in Monrovia, R.O Mohammed, who facilitated her return.

Preliminary findings indicate that the teenager was allegedly deceived and trafficked to Abidjan for the purpose of sexual exploitation. She reportedly escaped from her captors and fled to Liberia, where she sought assistance at the Nigerian Embassy.

On arrival in Nigeria, the diplomat formally handed the victim over to NAPTIP officials at the airport for further care and protection.

The agency confirmed that it has commenced necessary procedures to support the victim, including rehabilitation and counselling, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend those behind the trafficking network.

NAPTIP reiterated its commitment to combating human trafficking and ensuring the protection, rights and dignity of victims.
