The Nigerian Army (NA) has demonstrated its commitment to upholding the highest standards of conduct and ethics by apprehending personnel found in possession of illegal ammunition and explosives during a routine search operation. The incident occurred at the Borno Express Terminal in Maiduguri, Borno State, where the Military Police K9 Team conducted the operation.
Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the arrest, stating that Lance Corporal Mubarak Yakubu was discovered with 756 rounds of 7.62 mm special ammunition and four 36 hand grenades concealed within a small bag of rice. This arrest emphasizes the NA’s zero-tolerance policy towards illegal activities or breaches of military regulations by its personnel.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Yakubu had been de-inducted from active theatre operations in March 2024 and was undergoing de-induction training at the Nigerian Army School of Infantry. Nwachukwu disclosed that Yakubu was on a welfare pass from Jaji to Kaduna and Adamawa from April 30, 2024, to May 13, 2024, when the arrest occurred.
Assuring the public of decisive action to maintain discipline within its ranks and ensure the security of all Nigerians, Nwachukwu stated that Yakubu is currently in custody, and a thorough investigation has commenced to determine the full circumstances of the incident and apply appropriate disciplinary measures.
Nwachukwu praised the proactive efforts of the Military Police K9 Team, highlighting the NA’s relentless vigilance and proactive approach to enforcing compliance with military laws and regulations. He reiterated the Nigerian Army’s commitment to its role as a professional military organization dedicated to serving the nation and protecting its citizens.
