Nigeria played host to the prestigious Nija Open Taekwondo Tournament from August 21–22, 2025, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. The championship drew elite athletes from across Africa, including Egypt, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Algeria, and Tunisia, competing for international fighting licenses and continental recognition.
According to Acting Assistant Director Army Public Relations Headquarters Directorate of Army Physical Training Captain Joy Abah, the Nigerian Army (NA), represented by the Directorate of Army Physical Training (DAPT), made a strong impression at the event. Led by Major Lucky Ogiemudia, NA Taekwondo Chairman, the team competed for global ratings while reflecting the discipline, resilience, and combat readiness of the military.
“Taekwondo sharpens mental toughness and boosts combat readiness,” Major Ogiemudia noted, while commending the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Olufemi Oluyede, for his consistent support. “This is our third event this year, and the COAS ensures we are always prepared, both on the mat and in the field.”

Lance Corporal Daniel Alexander, one of the standout performers, credited taekwondo with enhancing his self-defense skills and professional discipline. He also expressed appreciation to the COAS for championing initiatives that empower soldiers both in service and beyond.
Team Nigeria concluded the tournament with 3 Gold, 6 Silver, and 23 Bronze medals, securing second place overall. The NA team proudly finished in 5th place, reaffirming Nigeria’s growing status as a force in African martial arts.
Beyond the medals, the championship celebrated international camaraderie, military valor, and the unifying power of sports.
