Nigerian teams triumph at Huawei ICT competition

Four Nigerian teams have excelled at the Huawei ICT Competition 2023-2024 Global Final in Shenzhen, China, winning two grand prizes and two first prizes on May 26, 2024.

Competing against 19 teams from nine countries, the Nigerian participants showcased their ICT knowledge and practical skills, standing out among over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 universities globally. This 8th edition of the competition, themed “Connection, Glory and Future,” is the largest offline event since its inception, with more than 160 teams from 49 countries making it to the global final.

The grand prize in the Computing Track category was won by a team from the University of Ibadan, consisting of Rufus Olusoji Adisa, Tolani Adekunle Adisa, Chibueze Emmanuel Ibekwe, and Lawrence Chukwuemeka. Another team from the same university, comprising Lukman Oyeniyi Abdulyekeen, Sodiq Babawale, and Temiloluwa Oloye, claimed the grand prize in the Cloud Track category.

Two teams from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, secured first prizes in the Network Track category. Team 1 included Knimi Bakna Musa, Kaosar Salaudeen Ahmad, Taiye Ayantola, and Oluwagbemiga Victor Ogundele. Team 2 comprised Justus Ilegieuno, Yusuf Olanrewaju Toye, and Jamiu Damilare Dahunsi.

The Nigerian teams excelled in both practical and theoretical digital skills at the national level before advancing through regional contests to the global finals in China.

Ritchie Peng, President of Huawei’s ICT Strategy and Business Development Department, emphasized the importance of ICT as a foundation for the intelligent world, stating, “Through the Huawei ICT Competition, we aim to provide students with a global platform to compete and exchange ideas.”

Zhou Hong, President of Huawei’s Institute of Strategic Research, highlighted Huawei’s commitment to digital inclusivity, noting the company’s efforts to ensure digital technologies are accessible to all.

Concurrent with the competition, Huawei hosted the ICT Accelerating Education Transformation Summit, where 24 instructors were honored as “Huawei ICT Academy Global Most Valuable Instructors” for their significant contributions to talent development. This recognition aims to foster role models who will further sustainable development in the ICT talent ecosystem.

The Huawei ICT Competition, launched in 2015, seeks to enhance students’ ICT knowledge and practical skills while fostering innovation. It aims to drive technological advancement and promote digital inclusion worldwide.
