In the ongoing legal saga surrounding the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, a fresh battle for bail has commenced against the backdrop of significant legal developments. Kanu, facing terrorism charges leveled against him by the federal government, has launched a motion for bail dated February 5, 2024, with legal representation handled by Alloy Ekimakor.
Confirming receipt of the motion for bail, Adegboyega Awomolo SAN, representing the federal government, acknowledged the filing. However, in a notable shift, the federal government has enlisted the services of legal luminary Chief Adegboyega Awomolo to lead its legal team in the prosecution of the treasonable felony charges against Kanu, replacing David Kaswe from the Federal Ministry of Justice who had previously handled the case.
Simultaneously, Kanu has made alterations to his defense team, engaging new lawyers for his representation. The trial, resuming at the Federal High Court in Abuja, witnessed a transition in legal representation. A new team of lawyers, spearheaded by PAM Ejiofor and Alloy Ejimakor, will now undertake Kanu’s defense in the 7-count charges. The reasons behind the change from the former legal team led by Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN and Ifeanyi Ejiofor remain undisclosed.
As proceedings commenced, the courtroom was inundated with a multitude of attendees, including lawyers, traditional rulers, clergymen, family members, and sympathizers of the Biafra movement. Notably, Kanu was present in the courtroom, having been brought by operatives of the Department of State Service (DSS).
The developments mark a significant juncture in the legal battle surrounding Kanu, underscoring the complexities and intensifying dynamics surrounding the case.
