- Awaits response from letter to President Tinubu
- Partners FRSC to boost emergency response on roads
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has once again expressed serious concerns about the deplorable state of federal roads in the State. He warned that if urgent remedial measures are not taken to address the dilapidated condition of these roads, a crisis is imminent in the coming weeks.
In his effort to draw attention to this critical issue, Governor Obaseki wrote a letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, seeking urgent intervention to alleviate the sufferings of the people. He is currently awaiting the President’s response on this matter.
The governor made these remarks during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Benin City by the Zonal Commanding Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in charge of Edo, Delta, and Anambra states, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Chukwuma Njoku, and the Edo State Sector Commander, Paul John Okpe.
Governor Obaseki expressed regret that the extensive network of federal roads in the State, which was meant to be a blessing, has turned into a curse due to neglect by the federal government. He emphasized the need to find solutions to the challenges posed by these poorly maintained roads, as they have put immense pressure on both the state government and the FRSC.
The governor cited the dangerous conditions on the Ovia River Bridge and the Benin-Auchi Road as examples of the urgent issues that require immediate attention. He stressed that remedial work should be carried out promptly to prevent further accidents and disruptions to transportation of goods and passengers.
Governor Obaseki warned of an impending crisis if the roads are not repaired promptly and expressed his hope for a response from the President to address the situation effectively.
The governor highlighted that road accidents have become a major security concern in the state, leading to a dramatic increase in loss of lives, especially in the previous month. He expressed his willingness to collaborate with the FRSC on emergency response and training first responders to handle critical situations effectively.
Governor Obaseki praised the FRSC for its support and collaboration over the years, mentioning their efforts to improve visibility by establishing additional commands in the state. He also expressed his desire to work together on various initiatives, including the use of towing trucks, driver training, and managing traffic-related issues.
The governor emphasized the importance of addressing the state of federal roads in Edo State promptly to ensure the safety and well-being of the people and prevent further damage and loss of lives.
