Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, resigned from their positions, contrary to reports suggesting they were removed from office.
A State House statement by Bayo Onanuga indicated that Edun tendered his resignation on health grounds prior to the announcement of his replacement by Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday.
Edun, who turned 70 on Monday, submitted his resignation letter on his birthday, expressing gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve. In his letter, he described his tenure as a “pleasure and privilege,” noting that under Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria had become “stronger, more resilient and more internationally respected.”
He also paid a valedictory visit to the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where both men held a closed-door meeting before Edun proceeded to focus on his private business interests.
Similarly, Dangiwa resigned his position, thanking the President for the opportunity to serve in the Federal Executive Council. The architect previously served as Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank from 2015 to 2022 and as Secretary to the Katsina State Government before his ministerial appointment in August 2023.
Edun, an economist and investment banker, earlier served as Lagos State Commissioner for Finance between 1999 and 2004 during Tinubu’s tenure as governor. His career also included roles at Chase Merchant Bank, the World Bank, and as co-founder of Investment Banking & Trust Company Limited (now Stanbic IBTC), as well as founder of Denham Management Limited.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to both former ministers for their contributions to the administration’s economic reform agenda and wished them success in their future endeavours.
The President has since directed the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, to consolidate ongoing reforms and advance fiscal objectives with renewed focus and innovation.
Meanwhile, Tinubu is expected to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Rabe Darma to the Senate for confirmation as the new Minister of Housing and Urban Development.
