Chief Iwuanyanwu, who passed away on July 25, 2024, at the age of 81, was a trailblazer in Nigerian sports, founding the renowned Iwuanyanwu Nationale Football Club (now Heartland F.C.) in 1985. His passion for excellence led the team to several national and international victories, making him a key figure in the nation’s sports development.
In public service, Chief Iwuanyanwu held numerous critical roles, including the founding chairmanship of the Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC) and the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC). He also chaired the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the Nigerian National Lottery, and the National Orthopaedic Hospital in Igbobi, among others.
President Tinubu emphasized Chief Iwuanyanwu’s courageous and principled nature, noting his defiance against injustice and his unwavering dedication to national growth. He praised the late statesman for his philanthropic efforts, which included providing scholarships to underprivileged students and investing in schools and hospitals.
“The passing of this illustrious son of Nigeria is a massive loss to the nation,” Tinubu stated, commending Iwuanyanwu’s remarkable achievements and his lasting impact on society. The president extended his condolences to the Iwuanyanwu family, the government and people of Imo State, and Ndigbo Gburugburu, as the country prepares for his burial rites in the coming days.
“May God Almighty grant his soul eternal rest,” Tinubu concluded.
