Sokoto warmly welcomes Gen Faruk Yahaya with grand reception and traditional turbaning

On August 12, 2023, all roads led to Sokoto, the capital of Sokoto state in North West Nigeria. Distinguished individuals from various walks of life gathered to honor Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya (rtd), a remarkable figure born in Sokoto. His retirement from the Nigerian Army on June 23, 2023, after an illustrious 37-year career, was marked by a grand reception and traditional turbaning.

Gen. Yahaya’s character is marked by qualities like fortitude, dedication, and love for his homeland. His selflessness and commitment to service propelled him to become the 22nd Chief of Army Staff. The event saw an impressive turnout of people from all walks of life, including young men on horses and camels, adorned in green and white attire, motorbike riders, tricycle drivers, and pedestrians.

The grand reception took place at the Sokoto State Sports Complex, featuring a colorful parade by local schoolchildren, cultural performances, and a Durbar display. Eminent personalities, including Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko and Governor Dr. Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, spoke highly of Gen. Yahaya’s dedication and contributions.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, praised Gen. Yahaya’s professionalism and leadership. Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, the outgoing Chief of Army Staff, described him as a mentor and a leader whose legacy will endure. The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji (Dr) Saad Abubakar III CFR, conferred upon him the traditional title of Zaruman Sokoto, recognizing his accomplishments as a warrior and a leader.

At home, Gen. Yahaya is a devoted father and husband to his wife, Mrs. Salamatu Faruk Yahaya, who led the Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association with impactful initiatives and philanthropic endeavors.

The warm reception, community support, and affection displayed by the people of Sokoto will forever be cherished by Gen. Yahaya, his family, friends, and all who attended. This celebration was a heartfelt recognition of his contributions to the Nigerian Army and his dedicated service to the nation.
